Resolved 11

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

11 Resolved – When I think of any theorem in divinity to be solved, immediately to do what I can towards solving it, if circumstances do not hinder.

Hmm – Am I think about divinity?

Resolved 10

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

10 Resolved – When I feel pain, to think of the pains of martyrdom and of hell.

Hmm – Shifting the mind to think on far deeper thoughts.

Resolved 9

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

9 Resolved – To think much, on all occasions, of my own dying, and of the common circumstances which attend death.

Hmm – This resolution reminds me of another by Peter Kreeft “Death’s approach has a wonderful power to clarify and simplify things. Rhetoric loses its power in the face of death. Death is the friend of truth. Dr. Johnson says he knows of no thought that so wonderfully clarifies a man’s mind as the thought that tomorrow morning he will be hanged.” Being vigilant in the approach of the end of your life can produce healthy thoughts of seizing your time.

My reading in Chronicles was a tidbit enjoyable as Solomon and Co. were sacrificing animals as the ark of the covenant entered the new temple. What was inside the ark? The two tablets that Moses put there at Horeb. As the ark arrived there were many musicians along with singers producing amazing praise in unison exclaiming “For he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever,.” The brilliance of God’s glory inhibited the priests from being able to stand because His glory filled the house.

Resolved 8

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

8 Resolved  – To act, in all respects, both speaking and doing, as if nobody had been so vile as I, and as if I had committed the same sins, or had the same infirmities or failings as others; and that I will let the knowledge of their failings promote nothing but the shame in myself, and prove only an occasion of my confessing my own sins and misery to God.

Hmm – Convicting! Even as I read I was thinking wow there are some people I know that could really use this…uhmm that’s the point. I am the vile person! God bring me humility and take me off the platform of arrogance.

Resolved 7

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

7 Resolved – Never to do anything which I should be afraid to do, if it were the last hour of my life.”

Hmm – I would to have more background on this resolution from Edwards himself.

In the Chronicles I’ve just started reading about the extravagant furnishings of God’s dwelling place in Israel.

Resolved 6

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

6 Resolved – To live with all my might while I do live.

Hmm – Now that I love! Squeezing everything possible out of life for God’s glory.

Resolved 5

As a young man Jonathan Edwards gave himself 70 resolutions to read weekly and pursue relentlessly. This 13th year of the 2nd millennium I have decided to reread and meditate upon his words, which so intrigued me as a teenager.

5 Resolved – Never to lose one moment of time, but to improve it in the most profitable way I possibly can.

Hmm – Time and space are real and what I do with these moments has true ramifications both while I present and departed. Will I engage optimistically attempting to make gradual  improvements in what my mind/hand find to do or will I take the path of least resistance, which is riding the wagon of rhetorical rants.

Chronicles was quite moving today as David finished up his time, said his goodbyes, and departed this physical earth for the moment. David charged his son, Solomon, carefully entrusting to him the pathway of blessing for future generations forever, obedience.
