Hebrews 9

First Covenant:

  • preparation of a tent
    • the author of Hebrews was unable to speak of the details
  • priests perform ritual duties
  • high priest priest enters second section, Most Holy Place
    • must have blood
      • for his sins
      • unintentional sins of other people
  • the Holy Spirit communicates through this ceremony “the way into the holy places is not yet opened whiles the first section is still standing”
  • gifts and sacrifices offered
    • unable to perfect the conscience of the worship
    • only deal with food, drink, and washings imposed on the body until the holy place is open

New Covenant:

  • Christ arrives through a greater and more perfect tent not of this creation
  • Christ did not use goat or calf blood. Christ used his own blood securing redemption
  • How can you compare the blood of goats and bulls with the  blood of Christ? You can’t–by the power of the Holy Spirit Christ offered himself to God
    • purifies our conscience from dead works so we can serve the living God
  • Mediator enables us to receive an eternal inheritance
  • Redemption from transgressions under the first covenant through death
  • Christ offered a better sacrifice because heavenly things demanded a better sacrifice
  • Christ was offered as a sacrifice for things in heaven itself not holy things created by physical hands

Change of Plans

The good news brought by Paul was not from a man sitting in a home coming up with a good story. The eternal story was horrible for the lead character, Jesus, who was  grossly mistreated and beaten by people with appetites for cruelty. Our human minds are attracted to short term gratification, which meant most never realized in the merciless beating they were simply fulfilling an eternal plan of my sovereign God. Through the demise Christ, the Son of God, would surprise all to burst through victorious. How can it be so normal to know Christ? It can’t. For Paul it was a cataclysmic event where God intervened and revealed Himself to Paul. Salvation is nothing short of me being consciously aware of God’s transformation of my life. Fortunately, salvation is blind to corrupt deeds; meaning in spite of Paul’s wistful destruction of the followers of Christ saving faith pierced through Paul’s corruptness. My testimony is nothing short of Jesus Christ revealing Himself to a corrupt guy wasting far to much time entertaining the pleasures of my world. Wow – the gospel is not from humanity it is from God. To have the gospel revealed is to have God make Himself known to me through salvation. Salvation is a God thing. May I sit at God’s feet and learn from Him. May I give constant attention to His venture.

Describable

The reception of the gospel comes through the power of God revealed by the Holy Spirit. I am encouraged that Paul said the proclamation of the gospel is powerful while he was weak and trembling for the gospel needs not the wisdom and oratory of man. As a messenger of the gospel I must walk in the Spirit and allow the power of God through the gospel to go forth. Skillful presentation cannot substitute for the power of God through the gospel.

God is wisdom and he gladly imparts to those who know Jesus Christ and him crucified through the Spirit. The wisdom is mysterious to the American culture as well as to the Corinthian culture of the time. World leaders are confused by it just as Corinthian leaders were confounded by it. Unknown to leaders the wisdom of God was decreed before all ages. The failure to tap into the wisdom of God resulted in Christ being crucified. The lack of wisdom from God results in blindness to what God has prepared for those who love Him.

The Spirit of God reveals the great depths and majesty of God the Father. It’s important that the spirit of this world not have a foothold in my life, rather the Spirit of God will masterfully unite my thoughts and actions to those of my Heavenly Father. The Spirit of God is also one who helps to understand things freely given to us by God one of which is salvation. The Spirit allows me to marvel at this gargantuan subject of soteriology. The Spirit steps in to unravel the great mysteries of God equipping messengers to impart in words the greatness of God to those who are spiritual.

God thanks for revealing your great wisdom through the Spirit. May I be engaged in active participation yearning to understand what your Spirit is teaching about you. The Spirit is equipped to describe your thoughts, which are freely given as we meditate on you. Lord help me to fellowship with you well today.

Calling vs Worldy Wisdom

Look at you how many of you in Corinth were wise according to worldly standards, strong, high and magnified, or more than mere nothingness? Very few. What does the wise think? How do the strong act? What do the high and magnified do? Paul encourages the Corinthians to consider God’s purpose in the cross of Christ. Humans are arrogant creatures, whether quiet or loud humans have a strong sense of I’m better than you and I did this own my own. God says, I easily make the wise foolish, the strong weak, and the high and magnified low and despised. Why? So I dare not enter the presence of God claiming to arrive via my own wisdom, power, or position. But why is it so important that I know this? Would I rather find out later that my current wisdom, power, or position did not suffice for the God of the universe? How unjust is it for a sovereign God to not declare my unworthiness and then later depart from me because I didn’t measure up. God conveys the message clearly; you are nothing. Thankfully God is an artist who can make something out of nothing. I am a nothing who only found something in Christ. Christ is wisdom, righteousness, sanctification, and redemption. In Christ I am God’s wisdom, unparalleled by anybody. In Christ I am righteous, which is legit power. In Christ I am sanctified, which is a fantastic position. In Christ I am redeemed, what other position could I desire more?  Dare I walk into the presence of God and boast, not by any means of my own! I may only boast in Christ.

Sign or Wisdom?

Look around where is the wise, scribe, or debater of this age? Where is the philosopher, theologian, or rhetorician? Have they found God? God’s uncanny abilities make the wisdom of this world foolish. But why? The world did not know God through wisdom it knew Him through the folly of preaching. Jewish culture was eagerly looking for a sign while the Greek culture sought wisdom, yet the answer was foolishly right at their fingertips. It was so close they stumbled over it. The proclaiming of Christ’s crucifixion for those called is “power” (Jewish sign) and “wisdom” (Greek wisdom). I know what the Jewish and Greek culture wanted, but what does my culture want. My hunch is science and entertainment. Often speaking of God will give people good goose bumps, but mentioned the cross of Christ and people cringe and clam up. Speak of Christ’s crucifixion in an academic setting and I’m sure to destabilize the conversational. Because of God’s omniscience his foolishness is wiser than humanity and because of his omnipotence his weakness is stronger than any human. Puzzling that Paul would mention God’s weakness when he is omnipotent or foolishness when he is omniscient. Twill be something nice to meditate on today.

So now God let me rest in your sovereign plan to display your power through the cross. May my proclaimation of Christ on the cross shake the cultures of the world and may I rest peacefully in your wisdom and strength. Lord thank you for people like Keith Getty that help us think of you via music!

The Power of the Cross by Keith Getty

Human Folly Divine Wisdom

It was not unusual for Corinth to have orators roaming the harbor streets answering philosophical questions with their announced wisdom. Voices echoed from their diaphragm exclaiming discerning thoughts and instruction for the ignorant and unlearned fellows.Orators found that good content and quality delivery resulted in at least a modest income. It seemed natural for the people of Corinth to cling to Christian orators like Paul, Apollos, and Cephas. But Paul delivers a stunning blow to their activity by explaining it’s not them it’s Christ. Paul declares for those who are perishing the cross is sheer folly. However, to those being saved the cross is the power of God. The cross seems unwise and less than ideal for a leader claiming to be the Savior of the world. One with discernment would find it quite challenging to explain the cross. How an event cursed by humanity would be used to display the power of God? How in the death of an individual can life be provided for others? How does submission and humiliation grant power and authority? What seemed hopeless was actually God using His power to bring salvation through Christ.

God may my life be passionate about Christ. May I spend my life attempting to comprehend the rich power of  the gospel through the cross. Though it appears foolish may I cherish the wisdom of the cross of Christ.

A Cloudy Return

Jerusalem skyGuys and gals that love Jesus don’t want others to be uninformed. Paul wants the Thessalonians to be comforted concerning those who are asleep. The Thessalonians hope for those who have already departed this physical earth is the death and resurrection of Jesus. Because of Jesus God will bring with Him those who are asleep. Paul’s expectation of Christ’s return is so certain that he expects it to happen before he dies. So Paul explains, no worries  for those who are asleep here is how it will happen in the future. Christ will descend from the heavens and cry out with a command. The command will sound like an archangel, not that I know what that sounds like, and the sound of God’s trumpet will pierce the airwaves of earth. Those who are asleep will be called up by Christ first and then those still awake at the return will follow them. We will follow them into the clouds with the Lord (at least I know what the weather will be like at his return – LOL–assuming I’ll have to keep up with the weather in Jerusalem {Act 1}). Once this gathering in the sky occurs, Paul indicates “so we will always be with the Lord.” The comforting is being with HIM so take these words and encourage one another with them. I’m anxious for Christ to return.

Direct Our Way

Paul’s desire to see the Thessalonians is followed with crying out to God, “may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you,…”. What followers of Christ am I anxious to be with because of their faith? Am I praying to be around them?  Are their disciples of Christ who want to be around my faith? Paul also prays that love for one another and all increases. Conflict, affliction, persecution can create a lot of tension and make relationships challenging. Paul encourages them to love one another in order to establish their hearts blameless in holiness before God the Father and the Lord Jesus return.

Thank you God for the two parts of the Trinity emphasized in this medium length sentence (for Paul). Both persons, you the Father and our Lord Jesus, are mentioned at the beginning and end of this sentence. Thank you God that I can confidently expect Christ’s return with all his saints. May I be found loving others and blameless at your return.

Courageous Resistance

As God developed the Thessalonians in the first century or me in the 21st century I can be confident in His faithfulness. Undoubtedly an evil one, in addition to our carnal self seeking flesh,  lurks attempting to destroy me through every means possible. It is real, but I must remain focused on the faithful one who will establish and protect. God’s “witness protection plan” is about preserving the life of His follower against the evil one.   The Psalmists reflect on God’s active faithfulness 40+ times (“As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain your mercy from me; your steadfast love and your faithfulness will ever preserve me!”). I find it encouraging to know that my protection does not revolve around my faithfulness for I would flunk out rather quickly. Nor does my protection revolve around the faithfulness of other followers of Jesus. I may find rest and comfort that the God of faithfulness is seeking to establish and guard me. The modus operandi of the evil one is to provoke me to disobedience to commands of God found in Scripture. There is probably no more vulnerable time for neglecting His commands then in the midst of an attack, like the persecution the Thessalonians were experiencing, when everything inside says be afraid run for your life. In the crisis of persecution, ignorance, and fear I must yield to the Lord for his direction. My heart is prone to distraction and unfaithfulness so I must acknowledge my need of  the Lord’s direction of my heart to Christ who practices “courageous active resistance to hostile attack” (TDNT). Though I may face volatility be encouraged by Christ’s active steadfastness.

Letters to a Diminished Church Part 3

letterstoadiminishedchurch Letters to a Diminished Church by Dorothy Sayers

The Dogma is the Drama (Chapter 3)

15 & 16 – “It would not perhaps be altogether surprising if, in this nominally Christian country, where the Creeds are daily recited, there were a number of people who knew all about Christian doctrine and disliked it. It is more startling to discover how many people there are who heartily dislike and despise Christianity without having the faintest notion what it is.”

Sayers describes her play The Zeal of Thy House
“…involves a dramatic presentation of a few fundamental Christian dogmas–in particular, the application to human affairs of the doctrine of the Incarnation. That the Church believed Christ to be in any real sense God, or that the eternal word was supposed to be associated in any way with the word of creation; that Christ was held to be at the same time man in any real sense of the word; that the doctrine of the Trinity could be considered to have any relation to fact or any bearing on psychological truth; that the church considered pride to be sinful, or indeed took notice of any sin beyond the more disreputable sins  of the flesh—all these things were looked upon as astonishing and revolutionary novelties, imported into the faith by the feverish imagination of a playwright. I protested in vain against this flattering tribute to my powers of invention, referring my inquirers to the creed, to the gospels, and to the offices of the Church; I insisted that if my play were dramatic it was so, not in spite of the dogma, but because of it—, in short, the dogma was the drama. The explanation was, however, not well received; it was felt that if there were anything attractive in Christian philosophy I must have put it there myself.”

Sayers’ in regard to us following Christ…

20 – “Perhaps we are not following Christ all the way or in quite the right sprit. We are likely, for example, to be a little sparing of the palms and hosannas. We are chary of wielding the scourge of small cords, lest we should offend somebody or interfere with trade. We do not furnish up our wits to disentangle knotty questions about Sunday observance and tribute money, nor hasten to sit at the feet of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions. We pass hastily over disquieting jests about making friends with the mammon of unrighteousness and alarming observations about bringing not peace but a sword; nor do we distinguish ourselves by the graciousness with which we sit at meat with publicans and sinners. Somehow or other, and with the best intentions, we have shown the world the typical Christian in the likeness of a crashing and rather ill-natured bore–and this in the name of one who assuredly never bored a soul in those thirty-three years during which we passed through the world like a flame. She continues “Let us, in heaven’s name, drag out the divine drama from under the dreadful accumulation of slipshod thinking and trashy sentiment heaped upon it, and set it on an open stage to startle the world into some sort of vigorous reaction. If the pious are the first to be shocked, so much worse for the pious–others will pass into the kingdom of heaven before them. If all men are offended because of Christ, let them be offended; but where is the sense of their being offended at something that is not Christ and is nothing like him? We do him singularly little honor by watering down his personality till it could not offend a fly. Surely it is not the business of the Church to adapt Christ to men, but to adapt men to Christ. It is the dogma that is the drama–not beautiful phrases, nor comforting sentiments, nor vague aspirations to lovingkindness and uplift, nor the promise of something nice after death–but the terrifying assertion that the same God who made the world, lived in the world and passed through the grave and gate of death. Show that to the heathen, and they may not believe it; but at least they may realize that here is something that a man might be glad to believe.”
